The Department of Tamil was established in the year 1950. It offers Part-I Tamil (Foundation Course) for all the U.G. students. Recently, the faculty of the department started guiding Part-time Ph.D. candidates. The department had the privilege of having eminent faculty members including the late Thiru. M. Rajamanickam. Their vision of academic growth and excellence of student community are still being promoted successfully by the existing seven dedicated faculty members.
Dr. S.Mahadevan, Associate Professor and Head, has participated in more than ten International and National level seminars and presented articles. He also attended special trainings and workshops. He has published 6 books including 3 monographs and produced 3 educational softwares. He rendered his services in various Central Government bodies and in the University of Madras, Corporation of Chennai and various NGOs as well, as resource person. He participated in a number of programmes in the All India Radio and Doordarshan.
Another faculty, Dr. B.Dhananjayan, specialized on medieval literature in general and Vaishnavism in particular, has attended and presented papers in 3 International and 12 National level conferences and published 3 books. Dr.B.Dhananjayan, had delivered a number of lectures on stages and popular media on ‘Vaishnavism’.
The department is usually active throughout the year by conducting various competitions. The most important feature that adds colour to the department is the “Tamil Maanavar Mandram-TMM (Tamil Literary club)”. It is involved in conducting competitions like oratorical, poetry writing, essay writing, singing, mono-acting, etc., on a regular basis, successfully. This provides a platform for the students to exhibit their talents and creativity.
In the year 2012, former Chairman of TMM, Selvan. A. Saravanan, III B.Sc. Chemistry won the first prize at the Inter-collegiate poetry writing competition conducted by the Directorate of Collegiate Education, Department of Higher Education and received the same from His Excellency, Dr. K.Rosaiah, Governor of Tamil Nadu. In 2013, in the same competition, student Selvi. R.TamilSelvi, III year Mathematics won the first prize in the oratorical competition and received it from the His excellency, Dr. K.Rosaiah, Governor of Tamil Nadu. The aforesaid students also participated in numerous inter-collegiate competitions and won cash awards and mementoes: A memento with cash prize in the oratorical competition on the title, ‘Chief Minster’s Vision 2023’, conducted by the Department of Higher Education, is noteworthy to mention.
At the end of every academic year, TMM has been conducting its Annual celebrations. Chief guests from various fields and celebrities from various media are invited for delivering lectures and distribution of prizes to the prize winners.

The Department has Part- Time Ph.D. facility.
The department has a separate Department Library with nearly 600 books and the General Library of the College has more than 2000 titles in Tamil.

Suganya received first price from Mr. K .C. Veeramani, Honorable minister, Government of Tamilnadu, on ‘Slogan Writing Competition on Leprosy.
