The genesis of Commerce Department with the Intermediate course in the year 1950 was one of the milestones in the history of the college. Professor B. Chengalvarayan was the founder H.O.D. who was Chairman of B.Com Board of Studies at University of Madras for a consecutive term of 25 years. The Department offers B.Com. Degree Course from 1970. The vision of the department is to render quality education to socially and economically backward students and nurture them to face the society with confidence. Consequently, the department provide exhaustive knowledge about the commerce subjects to the students, motivate them to pursue higher studies and assist them to take up employment and improve their standard of living. Over the last five decades, the passed out students have been occupying very high positions in public and private sector banks and also in top companies. Besides pursuing CA, CMA, CS and BL courses, many of the students are practicing taxation and other management consultancy. The department ascended as a Research Department in 2006, by extending part-time Ph.D. programme.

A separate Commerce Block is with six spacious, well-furnished and ventilated class rooms including two smart class rooms equipped with computers, internet facility and LCD Projector. The Part time Research scholars are provided with a computer with internet facility to pursue their research work.The Department has a book bank with rich collection of books for the benefit of economically poor students.
Sincere efforts are being taken to improve the learning process, to equip the students with core competencies and overall development by organizing various activities. The department regularly invites CA, CMA and CS professionals to address the students about those courses and how to approach those exams tactfully. The students are encouraged to take up competitive examinations like TNPSC, RRB, SSC and uniformed services. In order to get the practical exposure the students are taken for a field visit to SEBI constantly.
‘TDS Awareness programme’ was organized on 30th August 2019. Ms. Angel from the Income Tax Department, Chennai and her colleagues addressed the programme.
Shri Sandeep Modi, CA, CMA, CS, Managing Director, Swastik Tea Private Limited, Chennai addressed the Department students on the topic ‘Career Planning for Commerce Students on 27th September, 2019.
Two resource persons gave lectures on the topic – ‘Corporate needs from the Commerce Students’ on 11th October 2019. Shri J Rajkumar, Assistant General Manager, Human Resources, Pothys Private Limited, Chennai addressing in the first session and for the second session Ms. SelvapriyaJayanth, Assistant General Manager, Live Connections Placement Consultants, Chennai addressed the participants.
To render a practical knowledge to the students about the Capital Market and its regulator SEBI [Securities and Exchange Board of India], the department invited a speaker Shri M. Chandrasekhar, Senior Manager, Southern India Regional Office, Chennai from SEBI on 12th February 2020.
Faculty Members from the Egytim Academy, Chennai, a prominent CA coaching centre, Chennai addressed the students on 14th February 2020. They motivated the students suggesting various tips to crack CA Exams.
The Department of Commerce organized various activities for the Academic year 2019-2020 on 06th March 2020. Shri N Jayakumar, Chief Manager, CANFIN Homes Limited, Ambattur, Chennai was the Chief Guest for the programme. He highlighted the expectation of banking industry from the commerce graduates and distributed prizes and awards to the students who has secured the highest marks during the university examinations.
The staff of the department were handling online / offline / blended. The faculty members have published research articles in the SCOPUS and UGC listed have published Journals
Dr. K. Shoba was a resource person in a National Level online Workshop on “Google Classroom” on 7th July 2020 organized by Department of Computer Science, Nazareth College of Education for Women, Avadi, Chennai.
Dr. G. Vijayakumar has chaired a session during the International Conference organized by the Ethiraj College for Women on 11th February, 2020. He has also been resource person from a number of workshop in most of the colleges in Chennai.

Dr. S. ArchanaBai has given a Virtual Guest Lecture to the students of Chellammal Women’s College on “Working Capital Management” on 28th October, 2020.
Dr. R. Suresh Babu has been endorsed with Senior Educator and Scholar Award for his impeccable contribution to Teaching & Scholarly activities in the field of Commerce given by National Foundation For Entrepreneurship Development, Coimbatore. He is also serving as Editorial Board Member in Emperor International Journal of Finance and Management – UGC approved Journal and International Journal of Science and Humanities.
Dr. V. Balaji addressed the students of Mahalakshmi Arts and Science College, Avadi on “Career Opportunities and Professional courses ahead for Commerce Students” during 11th February, 2021.
The Department has produced 15 Ph. D. candidates from two Research guides Dr. M. Karunakar and Dr.G. Vijayakumar. Research Supervisor: Dr. M. Karunakar
The students are motivated to participate in inter-collegiate competitions, seminars and development programmes. The second year students have participated in a three days National Student Development Programme on “360 Approach towards career and Education prospects conducted by Department of Commerce (Accounting & Finance) Patrician College of Arts and Science from 24/05/2021 to 26/05/2021.
