The Department of Chemistry, Sir Theagaraya College, Chennai – 21, was established as early as 1950. The Department was headed by Prof. G.Venkateswarulu, when founded and it got upgraded in to a full-fledged one, in the year 1971. Most of the students preferring Chemistry hail from an educationally backward, deprived and disadvantaged part of Chennai. The Students are being offered with quality education and excellent educational ambience.
The Department but efforts to achieve and maintain high academic standards through sustained diligence and creativity in teaching, learning and extension work in an ambience of mutual, love and respect and effect holistic development of our stakeholders and also to provide education at par level of excellence for all stakeholders catering to the requirements for such walks of life as Chemists, Technicians, Educators, Researchers and Environmentalists contributing to our country’s growth with the state-of-the-art infrastructure and periodically updated curriculum.

The Department has 4-working laboratories of moderate size, electrical experiments, a-store room, a departmental library and two small chemical preparation rooms. The department library has about 1300 books with both lending and reference options to students, in addition to that, two periodicals being subscribed. The department conduct online/ offline/blended mode of teaching for students. The department has a smart room facility and the laboratories are equipped with instruments for processing with research.
Our faculty members have published about 140 research publications in reputed / peer reviewed / UGC listed journals and also presented papers in National / International conferences. Our faculty members keep participating as active speakers presenting subject oriented and extra / cocurricular activities with various Colleges and Universities. Our department was awarded with two Major research projects sponsored by UGC, New Delhi for Dr. P. Pazhanisamy and Dr. A. Rajendran. More than 15 candidates completed their Ph.D degree through “Part-time external” programme under Bharathiar University. Our department has conducted an E-Quiz on Fundamentals of Chemistry for two days during 10.06.2020 and 11.06.2020 for students, research scholars and faculty members of various Colleges / Universities. Our faculty members have constantly been motivating our students to participate in winning prizes / awards in various intercollege / cocurricular / extracurricular activities.
Dr. P. Pazhanisamy has been awarded the Best Faculty Award with a cash prize of Ten Thousand Rupees and has also received a travel grant by UGC, New Delhi for Paper presentation in Jeju, South Korea. Dr. A. Rajendran was awarded with Best Paper Award in National Level Conference held at Bishop Heber College in association with CECRI (Central Electrochemical Research Institute), Karaikudi.
