The Department of English- shift II was established in 1965 and it has carved its imprint among the other departments of Sir Theagaraya College. The Department feels joyful by inculcating the language and literature to the students’ community. It has been teaching English as Part II to the UG students. It has taken all the efforts to provide a firm foundation in English for students mainly from the relegated section of the society.

The department aims to provide a viable and credible learning experience for the aspiring student community who seek to expand their knowledge pertaining to English language and literature across diverse fields of study.

The department also aims at the students learning to use English for academic and professional purposes to mould young minds to ease the travail on their path socially, economically, politically and regionally and shine as stalwarts of freedom by bearing the torch of knowledge.

Communicative English and Professional English provide the students with a strong content of communication. Language through literature provides the students with literature content and an equivalent content of communication. It helps them to apply critical and theoretical approaches to the analysis of literary texts. The Language Lab is available for teaching Soft Skills which has been made a regular part in the process of learning.

Besides imparting domain- knowledge and skills, the teaching practices of the Department seeks to promote interpersonal skills and team spirit among students. In a view to strengthen the language and communicative competencies of students the students take up Professional English as a value added course.

The faculty members of the Department of English are dedicated to mould the students into confident, knowledgeable, skilled, career based, good values and socially conscious citizens contributing to the progress of our Nation and the wider humanity.

• The department is well equipped with good Library, with advanced computer system and good Network any time.
• Apart from this, as a language department we extend our teaching practically through the English Lab provided separately.
• The English Lab consists of 30 individual computers for the students of all the discipline to learn, practice and develop their English Language.
• The systems are installed with Language Learning software which was purchased for the development of students to increase skill based learning.
• The English Lab is mainly used for Grammar teaching and learning process and Soft skill development.
• We also have LCD Projectors where students are engaged with PPT lectures, videos of the text prescribed, short films to motivate them in the involvement of their studies and career.
